210 Local Media Magazine – Issue 3 Vol 1

Yay, it’s an Editorial! – Issue 3 Vol 1

I started the 210 Local Media Podcast
after purchasing my first iPhone back in 2013, and discovering the Stuff You Should Know Podcast, Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast, and several podcasts about podcasting. I noticed that each show either had information to share, or a special type of bond with peaople that they shared, and that the form, really was like no other. I quickly became inspired to mix my love of local music, with the newfound awesomeness of podcasting. At the time, there were only a couple of San Antonio Podcasts; The Unavoidable Drudge, and The BoozedCast (both have podfaded for now). Admittedly, my first few episodes were plagued with sound issues, crazy podcasting scheduling, and finding people that were available and wanting to be interviewed.

Since then, we’ve been able to play mixed tape episodes, interviews, and entire albums on the podcast, put on two benefit shows, and helped to raise over $12,000 for a friend with cancer (In remission!). Since then, more local podcasts are popping up everywhere; The Owlcast, She’s Crafty, It’s a Guy Thing Podcast, Geek Culture, Vinyl Pizza, and Texas Music Spotlight, to name a few. So, here we are, and I’m taking advantage of being the guy that says what each issue can/should have. Check out the spread on the local podcasts, and the Alamo City Podcast Network we created to help each other out and gain a much larger footpring in the process.
Thanks for reading, listening, and supporting! – Issue 3 Vol 1

Episode 72: Mario’s TOP 100 (50-26)

Thanks for tuning in to 210 Local Media podcast, I am your host, Mario Zamarron. We’re continuing with the next group of 210 Local Media’s Top 100 songs. More appropriately, they’re my top 100 pics and they’re grouped in 4 sets of 25, and in each episode, they’ll be presented in alphabetical order. Thanks to all of the musicians that have made this podcast possible, thanks to those who have made getting a hold of music, releases, or promo stuff easy, and thanks to YOU, the listener, for continuing to listen and make me feel that this is a worthwhile venture. I hope to accomplish a lot more in 2016, and I hope you enjoy my top 100 local songs.

Episode 68: F.I.N. RADIO – Forever Is Never

Thanks for tuning in to 210 Local Media Podcast, I am your host, Mario Zamarron. For those who have been listening to the show for a while, you know I manage the band Slowlikefire. Two fifths of Slowlikefire used to be in Forever Is Never a.k.a. FIN, Jaime Monzon and David Monzon. I never got to hear them while they were an active band unfortunately, but this episode features their self titled album, Forever Is Never. If you’re local to the San Antonio, think back to Sin 13 and the heyday of The White Rabbit (now the Paper Tiger). For those who are familiar, this will bring back memories of those times and the rawness that can still be heard throughout San Antonio’s musical history. For those who are not familiar, we hope you like this look into the recent past and a part of what eventually became Slowlikefire. Today, we focus on FIN. Check out their still active website, www.foreverisnever.com

THE AKUZMA/SLOWLIKEFIRE LOCALS ONLY SHOWCASES

210 LOCAL MEDIA PODCAST HAS EXPANDED AS AN ARTIST MANAGEMENT AND SHOW PROMOTION COMPANY

THE AKUZMA/SLOWLIKEFIRE LOCALS ONLY SHOWCASES

The Akuzma - Zombies - 10.16.15

San Antonio, October 16, 2015 – Zombies

SLF - Jack's Patio - 10.24.15

San Antonio, October 24, 2015 – Jack’s Patio

210 Local Media owner Mario Zamarron started his company as a podcast in 2013 for the purpose of discovering local and original music. Since then, he has expanded his scope and has had the honor of interviewing numerous artists, musicians, filmmakers, and other entertainers in the greater San Antonio area. The podcast has also featured music from over 80 local bands and musicians, and has covered indie, alternative, hard rock, punk, country, metal, rap, R&B, electronic, Christian rock, and instrumental music in over 60 episodes. They’ve been able to share San Antonio with listeners in over 100 countries and have been downloaded over 13,000 times. Recently (under 210 Local Music), they’ve made the jump into managing two San Antonio artists, alternative rock band Slowlikefire and metal band, The Akuzma.

Slowlikefire was born out of now defunct mainstay bands in the San Antonio music scene. The band started in February 2013 and by August of that same year they released their debut “Thieves by Nature” with the riveting “My Name is Billie Jean Davy” quickly gaining airplay on 99.5 KISS and internet radio. Their sound is a mix of everything they love about music. They’ve been compared to The Cure, Incubus, Coheed and Cambria, and Thursday but the sound is all their own. Slowlikefire has opened for Glassjaw, Stolas, Hail the Sun, A Lot Like Birds and played River City Rockfest 2014 along with Deftones, Kid Rock, and Nothing More. In May 2015, Slowlikefire released its full length “City of Echoes,” under DKD Records (El Paso).

Formed in San Antonio in fall of 2011, The Akuzma is a mixture of sound ideas under the banner of metal and electronic music. Blending genres from Industrial, Rock, metal, electro, Goth, trance, EBM and more, The Akuzma writes what they feel straight from the heart. Its members all come from various industrial-metal bands around San Antonio that have played shows and worked together before. They have released two EPs and one single and have shared the stage with such national acts as: Static-x, Orgy, Mushroomhead, Wayne Static, One Eyed Doll, Murder FM, and countless, amazing local Texas acts.

This month, on October 16th, 210 Local Music will be hosting its first all locals, metal showcase at Zombies Bar on 4202 Thousand Oaks Drive. This is a 21+ show with a $5 cover and brings some of San Antonio’s best metal bands together in one night, Pedagogic, Pigweed, Aurorean, and The Akuzma. The doors open at 5pm and the music starts at 9:30pm.

On October 24th, 210 Local Music hosts their second “locals only” showcase. This showcase features alternative rock bands After Me (including members from disbanded Secrets and Irises), WAXPANEL, Sandoz, and Slowlikefire and will be held at Jack’s Patio Bar on 3030 Thousand Oaks Drive. This is an all ages show; $10 minors $7 21+. Doors open at 8pm and music starts at 9pm.

Episode 60: Listeners Choice SUPERMIX

Episode 60: Listeners Choice SUPERMIX

Thanks for tuning in to 210 Local Media Podcast, I’m your host, Mario Zamarron. I know most people celebrate 50 episodes, but we were in the middle of Local Music Week, and I didn’t want our milestone to overshadow the theme of the week. So, we’re doing it now. We’re celebrating 60 episodes. In less than 3 years, we’ve managed to develop a global audience, we’ve conducted 17 interviews, played over 30 episodes of almost pure music, played over 18 entire albums from beginning to end, we’ve done a benefit concert for Toys for Tots, we’ve attend the Alamo City ComicCon twice (soon to be thrice), we’ve been able to get media access to other events, and we've connected with so many musicians, artists, filmmakers, and entertainers.

We’re so happy at what we’ve accomplished within 60 episodes, but like any artist, we’re hungry for more. Right now, we’re trying to at least make the top three finalists in the San Antonio Current’s Best of Music issue. We’ve conducted some more interviews and plan on even more moving into the next 60 episodes. We’ll soon launch our Patreon crowd funding page to help with the rising costs of being a podcaster and give people the opportunity to gain access to Patreon only content.

Recently on Facebook, I asked for audience and music community feedback on who we should play on this 60th episode. Without further ado, here are the musicians and bands that have been requested via Facebook and our 60th episode, Listeners Choice Supermix.

Slowlikefire – With Envy & I’ve Come To Set The Record Straight
WAXPANEL – Believe & Dying Inside

Episode 52: #LMW2015 Mixed Tape Volume 3

Episode 52: #LMW2015 Mixed Tape Volume 3

Thanks for tuning in to 210 Local Media Podcast and the last day of our Local Music Week 2015 episodes.

This will be our last Mixed Tape for the Local Music Week series, but we will keep going mixed tape episodes in the future like we always have. Our first track is Slowlikefire’s “With Envy” from their new album City Of Echoes. These guys are primed for success. With that, for those who are not already following us on social media, you probably don’t know that 210 Local Music, a subsidiary of 210 Local Media, is now an indie record label and artist management company! I’m very excited to share that our first artist signing to our artist management division, is Slowlikefire. Slowlikefire recently signed with El Paso Indie Record label, DKD Records. We’re hoping this will bring more notice to Slowlikefire, DKD Records, and 210 Local Media and everyone we know and love. You can find Slowlikefire on www.slowlikefire.com, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and pretty much all over our 210LocalMedia.com website.

After that, we’re proud to bring you one of my favorite songs from Rumors, “Pillow”. Rumors recently parted ways with their singer and have started auditioning new singers during the last week or so. We here at 210 Local Media believe heavily in Rumors and ex-singer Michael Christopher’s side project, now full time project, You And I Under Water. Keep up with us as we follow both with their progress.

Another of our favorites is Donella Drive, with another single off of their recent EP Anomalous, “Alone With The Devil”. We can’t say enough nice things about this band. They hugged me when we did their interview a couple of months ago, so that’s where the loyalty comes from. Be sure to follow them everywhere as /DonellaDrive or @DonellaDrive.

You heard the second release from the hardest working band in Texas a couple of episodes, but now we”re bringing you The Heroine and a track off of their first full release with, “Ballad Of Lenny King”. Keep up with us and The Heroine, we’re hoping to nail down an interview soon!

Next up, we’ve got our old friends, Hydra Melody and a song from their much anticipated next album. “Honey” has been out for a bit, but the guys are really keeping the new album under wraps. As soon as we hear more, we’ll let you know!

If Hydra Melody had brothers in a different band, they would all be in The Sound Of Curves. We’ve played “Gone Gatsby” for you a few episodes ago, but we wanted to bring you their song “Rumors” today. These guys have a strong pop sensibility and we look forward to hearing more great music from them soon!

I met our next musician at the first Local Music Week meeting and have kept up with her since. We’ve gotten an interview with her ready to go soon, so follow and subscribe so you don’t miss out. San Antonio’s own Merilette recently made a splash with her album release, Mindpaint at Jack’s Patio and has been non-stop since then. Here’s Merilette with her song, “Comfortable Love”.

Our next musician is Storm Calysta with her track, “Hero”. I really think that this track could be on the relaunch of The Never Ending Story, should they ever do one.

Finally, we leave you with a group of amazing musicians, Aliens WITH Halos and their song, “The Source”. We’ve been working on an “In The Studio With” episode and hope to have it out next month. Luckily, you get a little teaser since we’re going to cover this exact track.

This is the last day of local Music Week and you can relive the week on social media if you use #LMW2015 Thanks to Local 782, SATX Music, and Do210 for being the primary organizers behind this years Local Music Week. Check out Do210.com for a very inclusive calendar of events for the local music in San Antonio, Texas. Next year, I’m hoping to not be sick at all and actually make it out to most of the events compared with none this year. Either way, thanks for listening and if I don’t die, we’ll see you here soon!
