210 Local Media Magazine – Issue 2 Vol 1

210 Local Media Magazine – Issue 2 Vol 1 – The Metal Issue

Not too long ago, I was a decidedly not a fan of metal, metalcore, hardcore, deathcore… stuff. I was the guy at the Tera
Ferna, Black Market Club, and Slowlikefire shows. I’d jam to Hydramelody in the car and follow it up with some Fishermen. One day, my buddy Jason invites me to see his band The Akuzma, and I finally say that I’ll go. I warn him though, it’s not my scene and if I don’t have a great reaction, it’s because I just don’t get it. The screaming, the wailing, the chunky bass lines that sound like a garbled mess of a garbage disposal being turned on and off, instead of the 4 stringed, multi-note
instrument I’ve come to know and love. I just couldn’t be a fan of that. So, I went and saw The Akuzma play at Fitzgerald’s. Some of the songs were too foreign to me, but somewhere among the loud wall of heavy stuff, I started to tap my foot. I started to rock my head back and forth. By the last song, their cover of Falco’s
“Amadeus”, I was throwing up the good old rock/devil fingers. I was enjoying myself, a lot. They had me after that, I was a fan, I was converted.
There’s still a large chunck of these types of styles that I wouldn’t normally pick to
listen to, but I get it now. The appeal of the anger and passion of being pissed off, instead became on understanding that there was
emotion, just a brutally honest kind of emotion. There are a few other bands I listen to that are “Akuzma-like”, and I’m much more open to checking out something new than I was before.
I guess that’s my point really; we should be open to more music in our lives, no matter where it comes from. As long I can get grooving to it, or get moving to it, I’m a fan. So this issue is dedicated to the Metal/Hard side of the local scene. The exception is Anna’s piece on Swimming With Bears at the 502 Bar, so it just goes to show that
diversity is a really cool thing. Thanks for reading.

210 Local Media Magazine – Issue 1 Vol 1

210 Local Media Magazine
Issue 1 Vol 1

This project started as a blog, a response to a meeting between local band Girl In A Coma and Nelson Wolff, where he declared his mission to help San Antonio become the live music capital of the world. What came of that meeting, either politically or otherwise, I do not know. It did however, inspire me to create 210 Local Media. In March of 2013, I started the 210 Local Music Podcast (later, to become 210 Local Media Podcast), in the hopes that we could be one the helping hands. Three years later, I've gotten to experience some amazing things, all in the name of desire and discovery.
This magazine is the written/digital version of these kinds of experiences.
Our promise to you, is to have you join us on that journey into the San Antonio scene. We will focus mostly on San Antonio, and only turn elsewhere, should the story have any local implications.

This is for San Antonio. This is for our city.

Episode 79: The Akuzma

Episode 79: The Akuzma

Thanks for tuning in to 210 Local Media podcast, I am your host, Mario Zamarron. In this episode, I sat down with the band I manage, The Akuzma, to talk about who they are, how they got to where they are, and all things Akuzma. The interview is from a while back, when we were planning to release their upcoming EP under the 210 banner. Unfortunately, we’ve had difficulties raising the necessary funds to put it out ourselves. Also, the band has undergone and is continuing to undergo changes to style and lineup. This in an introduction to what got the Akuzma to where they are today and a springboard to the foundation of the band. Once The Akuzma 3.0 emerges, we will definitely catch up with them. www.akuzma.com

I could go on for a very long time about this topic, so if you liked it, please let us know on our Facebook page /210LocalMedia or on Twitter @210LocalMedia. As always, thanks for listening!

Episode 72: Mario’s TOP 100 (50-26)

Thanks for tuning in to 210 Local Media podcast, I am your host, Mario Zamarron. We’re continuing with the next group of 210 Local Media’s Top 100 songs. More appropriately, they’re my top 100 pics and they’re grouped in 4 sets of 25, and in each episode, they’ll be presented in alphabetical order. The qualifications are that they are/were local, played a song I like, and have either sent me music or have made their music available to me. Some bands will be played more than once as we get higher on the “chart”, some bands are totally absent because of the lack of a music release, or because the license to play their music is too expensive. By and large though, we’ve got the bulk of it here. Thanks to all of the musicians that have made this podcast possible, thanks to those who have made getting a hold of music, releases, or promo stuff easy, and thanks to YOU, the listener, for continuing to listen and make me feel that this is a worthwhile venture. I hope to accomplish a lot more in 2016, and I hope you enjoy my top 100 local songs.

The Akuzma – Apotheosis
Bekah Kelso – Grey’s Not Easy
The Black Market Club – Juan Pablo (Live & Acoustic)
The Cinderleaf – A Ring Around Her
Donella Drive – Late Night & Alone With The Devil
Fallout – Hell To See
Fishermen – All My Love
Glasir – Zero Ring
The Heroine – Who Do You Love

THE AKUZMA/SLOWLIKEFIRE LOCALS ONLY SHOWCASES

210 LOCAL MEDIA PODCAST HAS EXPANDED AS AN ARTIST MANAGEMENT AND SHOW PROMOTION COMPANY

THE AKUZMA/SLOWLIKEFIRE LOCALS ONLY SHOWCASES

The Akuzma - Zombies - 10.16.15

San Antonio, October 16, 2015 – Zombies

SLF - Jack's Patio - 10.24.15

San Antonio, October 24, 2015 – Jack’s Patio

210 Local Media owner Mario Zamarron started his company as a podcast in 2013 for the purpose of discovering local and original music. Since then, he has expanded his scope and has had the honor of interviewing numerous artists, musicians, filmmakers, and other entertainers in the greater San Antonio area. The podcast has also featured music from over 80 local bands and musicians, and has covered indie, alternative, hard rock, punk, country, metal, rap, R&B, electronic, Christian rock, and instrumental music in over 60 episodes. They’ve been able to share San Antonio with listeners in over 100 countries and have been downloaded over 13,000 times. Recently (under 210 Local Music), they’ve made the jump into managing two San Antonio artists, alternative rock band Slowlikefire and metal band, The Akuzma.

Slowlikefire was born out of now defunct mainstay bands in the San Antonio music scene. The band started in February 2013 and by August of that same year they released their debut “Thieves by Nature” with the riveting “My Name is Billie Jean Davy” quickly gaining airplay on 99.5 KISS and internet radio. Their sound is a mix of everything they love about music. They’ve been compared to The Cure, Incubus, Coheed and Cambria, and Thursday but the sound is all their own. Slowlikefire has opened for Glassjaw, Stolas, Hail the Sun, A Lot Like Birds and played River City Rockfest 2014 along with Deftones, Kid Rock, and Nothing More. In May 2015, Slowlikefire released its full length “City of Echoes,” under DKD Records (El Paso).

Formed in San Antonio in fall of 2011, The Akuzma is a mixture of sound ideas under the banner of metal and electronic music. Blending genres from Industrial, Rock, metal, electro, Goth, trance, EBM and more, The Akuzma writes what they feel straight from the heart. Its members all come from various industrial-metal bands around San Antonio that have played shows and worked together before. They have released two EPs and one single and have shared the stage with such national acts as: Static-x, Orgy, Mushroomhead, Wayne Static, One Eyed Doll, Murder FM, and countless, amazing local Texas acts.

This month, on October 16th, 210 Local Music will be hosting its first all locals, metal showcase at Zombies Bar on 4202 Thousand Oaks Drive. This is a 21+ show with a $5 cover and brings some of San Antonio’s best metal bands together in one night, Pedagogic, Pigweed, Aurorean, and The Akuzma. The doors open at 5pm and the music starts at 9:30pm.

On October 24th, 210 Local Music hosts their second “locals only” showcase. This showcase features alternative rock bands After Me (including members from disbanded Secrets and Irises), WAXPANEL, Sandoz, and Slowlikefire and will be held at Jack’s Patio Bar on 3030 Thousand Oaks Drive. This is an all ages show; $10 minors $7 21+. Doors open at 8pm and music starts at 9pm.

Episode 60: Listeners Choice SUPERMIX

Episode 60: Listeners Choice SUPERMIX

Thanks for tuning in to 210 Local Media Podcast, I’m your host, Mario Zamarron. I know most people celebrate 50 episodes, but we were in the middle of Local Music Week, and I didn’t want our milestone to overshadow the theme of the week. So, we’re doing it now. We’re celebrating 60 episodes. In less than 3 years, we’ve managed to develop a global audience, we’ve conducted 17 interviews, played over 30 episodes of almost pure music, played over 18 entire albums from beginning to end, we’ve done a benefit concert for Toys for Tots, we’ve attend the Alamo City ComicCon twice (soon to be thrice), we’ve been able to get media access to other events, and we've connected with so many musicians, artists, filmmakers, and entertainers.

We’re so happy at what we’ve accomplished within 60 episodes, but like any artist, we’re hungry for more. Right now, we’re trying to at least make the top three finalists in the San Antonio Current’s Best of Music issue. We’ve conducted some more interviews and plan on even more moving into the next 60 episodes. We’ll soon launch our Patreon crowd funding page to help with the rising costs of being a podcaster and give people the opportunity to gain access to Patreon only content.

Recently on Facebook, I asked for audience and music community feedback on who we should play on this 60th episode. Without further ado, here are the musicians and bands that have been requested via Facebook and our 60th episode, Listeners Choice Supermix.

Episode 51: #LMW2015 The Akuzma RADIO

Episode 51: #LMW2015 The Akuzma RADIO

Thanks for tuning in to 210 Local Media Podcast and day six of our Local Music Week 2015 episodes.

This episode is dedicated to our friends at The Akuzma. Recently, they won their way to the final two bands of a local Battle of the Bands competition, but despite their best efforts, didn’t get the win they were hoping for. Despite this, all of their close fans responded with nothing but support, reminding me of Spurs fans, so to our friends in the Akuzma, I say that you may have lost the battle, but you gained knowledge that your fans love you and support you, and there’s nothing more important than having a strong fan base. These guys represent the harder side of the local music scene, and I wanted to share them with you all. Here’s The Akuzma’s most recent EP Muerte:
